Developing advanced nutritional strategies for patients. Moving away from one size fits all approaches and shifting to data-driven precision and even personalized nutritional therapies. Evolving innovative concepts which include digital therapeutics, next generation nutraceuticals and tailored microbiome derived therapies in order to improve the lives of many patients especially with irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer.
Our approach
The aim of our research is to provide the best possible nutritional therapy individually adapted to each patient in order to combat diseases early and effectively. For this purpose, we use state of the art technologies to study in detail the interindividual differences in metabolic and immune responses of people to food and food components.
Using confocal laser endomicroscopy, we are able to provide new insights into the pathophysiology of food hypersensitivity, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Through our metabolomics unit we investigate dietary and disease specific metabolite signatures to identify and validate new biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Multi-omics analysis are performed in alliance with our Mircobiomics group. Under the umbrella of the university's Center for Artificial Intelligence, we are developing data-driven nutrition concepts as part of digital therapeutics by integrating digital and biological markers. Clinical trials are conducted in close collaboration with the 1st Medical Department and Comprehensive Center for Inflammation Medicine (CCIM) at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein.
About the PI
Dr. Sina is a medical doctor and specialist in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is Fresenius Kabi Professor of Nutritional Medicine, founding director of the Institute of Nutritional Medicine and has more than 15 years experience in medical research. He serves as a consultant for gastroenterology and clinical nutrition at the 1st Medical Department and the Comprehensive Center for Inflammation Medicine (CCIM) at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck. Dr. Sina is co-founder of Perfood GmbH, past-president of the German IBD working group (DACED) and currently chairman of the German Society of Mucosal Immunology & Microbiome (DGMIM).
